On 9 March, Richmond, Virginia-based singer, bandleader and modern soul visionary Matthew E. White will release Fresh Blood, his first full-length album for Domino and the follow-up to the critically acclaimed debut Big Inner. Produced by White and Spacebomb partner Trey Pollard and mixed by Pat Dillett (David Byrne, Nile Rodgers), Fresh Blood marks the next chapter of White’s Spacebomb Records – an analog studio, record label and production house with in-house strings, horns and a choir at his behest. Audacious, confident and masterful, Fresh Blood is a bracing, beguiling record and a bold advance for White – a record that feels like the brilliant bloom to Big Inner’s striking bud. White has also confirmed an album release show at LSO St. Luke’s in London on 10 March 2015. Watch the new trailer, which was filmed in Super 8 and features a clip of the song ‘Tranquility’, itself a tribute to actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZryzsrF_PRw
In 2009, White and his friends established Spacebomb to turn the tunes of songwriters they liked into grandiose, graceful statements. To demonstrate the Spacebomb ideal, White and his wide cast of musicians – possessing a vast knowledge that could pivot from the gusto of New Orleans to the verve of Detroit, from tube-amp rock to hi-fi pop – recorded a few songs he’d pieced together and called it Big Inner, hoping to show other songwriters how the system would work. In the 18 months that followed the release, White toured America and Europe extensively, sharing the stage with St. Vincent, The National and Bon Iver among many others, eventually signing with Domino to release Big Inner worldwide. White played major festivals, including Glastonbury, Primavera, and more, and Big Inner earned five stars in The Guardian and a spot on its year-end list, plus those of Pitchfork, The Line of Best Fit and others. Uncut called it “one of the great albums of modern Americana,” while The Independent deemed Big Inner “a genuine classic.”
If the first album had been serendipity, every step of Fresh Blood was to be deliberate – from his co-writing sessions with longtime friend and former bandmate Andy Jenkins, to his steady arrangement brainstorms with the trusted Spacebomb house band—bassist Cameron Ralston, drummer Pinson Chanselle and guitarist Trey Pollard. Simultaneously recognising the trouble and delight that life can bring, these 10 original songs of Fresh Blood are guides for times of joy, agony and the middle distance where we most often linger.
Fresh Blood will be available on CD (WIGCD309), Vinyl (WIGLP309) and via digital download (WIG309D). There is also a special edition of the album, which is a double LP gatefold heavyweight vinyl (WIGLP309X) containing a bonus LP titled Fresh Blood: No Skin – a full length minimalist mix of the entire album, minus strings/horns or choir. You can pre-order Fresh Blood via iTunes or DomMart.
