Philadelphia-based songwriter Alex Giannascoli, more commonly known as Alex G, has shared a track called ‘Change‘ from the upcoming physical release of his previously Bandcamp-only album Trick – one week before he heads out on a UK headline tour.
In their extensive profile, The FADER wrote that Alex G is “the type of artist to make a person go all Garden State”, as anyone who attended Alex’s sold out London show last November would have witnessed in-between his mammoth 21-song setlist. An enrapt audience hushedly singing along to ‘Change’ was one of the many magical moments, and Alex himself acknowledges that ‘Change’ “resonates with a lot of people, probably because the lyrics deal with growing away from people you love […] something that everyone experiences.”
‘Change’ drips with teenage angst and huge, singalong verses. Alex manages to craft a relatable narrative with relatively little; your memory conjuring images of nights past when he closes the song wispily singing “remember when you took too much / I didn’t mind being your crutch / we loved you then, it’s not the same / I don’t like how things change”.
Trick is due out on 6 April worldwide, on all formats via Lucky Number.
Alex G returns to London next week on 3 March at Chats Palace, as part of a wider European tour.
