Angelo De Augustine recently announced that his new album, Tomb – his first recorded in a studio and produced by renowned musician Thomas Bartlett(aka Doveman; credits include work on albums for St. Vincent, Sufjan Stevens, Antony and the Johnsons and David Byrne) – will be released on January 18, 2019 via Asthmatic Kitty Records. Along with the announcement he shared the lead single ‘Time‘ as well as an intimate live video featuring Sufjan Stevens playing grand piano and filmed in Manhattan’s Reservoir Studios, where Tomb was also recorded. Today he has followed up with the video for the album’s title track. He has also announced that he’ll be heading to Europe for a string of headline shows including at London‘s Oslo on 18 Feb. Full dates are below.

Speaking of the track Angelo says:

“I was on a day trip in a town called Ojai and went into a second hand music shop out of curiosity. Hanging on the wall was a peculiar stringed instrument that I had never seen before. I asked if I could view it up close and was told that it was called a Bandurria; a 16th century chordophone from Spain. I immediately bought it and tucked it away, thinking that some day I might compose a song on it. When I was writing the album I reached for it a few times, and this was one of those times.”

A quiet heartache threads through Tomb. It’s a universal feeling, the kind that piles up over the years and yearns for resolution. The 12 songs came together quickly, out of necessity following his first true heartbreak around Christmas 2017 – and while the album was born from this breakup, it expanded to explore years of loss and disappointment. Ultimately Tomb reflects a beginning for De Augustine – both emotionally and in his career. It’s a motion towards positivity, addressing lost love, the worthwhile cost of honesty, and the ramifications of regret. In the end, this album isn’t about burying or hiding something away, it’s about opening the seal and letting something new emerge. The album’s title reveals these sentiments: “Throughout our lives we bury many dead things in our hearts and minds,” he says. “There they go to rest and hopefully are reborn as something beautiful”.

Tomb is a musical breakthrough for De Augustine, with Bartlett’s artful production spotlighting his increasingly impressive songwriting. Working in a professional studio marked a significant shift from his previous albums, 2014’s Spirals of Silence and 2017’s Swim Inside The Moon, which each were recorded in his bathtub using a reel-to-reel machine and a single Shure SM57 microphone. The latter, his Asthmatic Kitty debut, earned worldwide praise from outlets including Uncut, Mojo, Stereogum, The Sunday Times and The Line of Best Fit, among others. De Augustine’s sweeping, minimalist songs have since piloted him to tours with Moses Sumney and and a spot opening for Stevens’ Planetarium concert at Hollywood Forever Cemetery (the Thousand Oaks native’s biggest hometown show to date).
