Today, Bedouine returns with new song ‘When You’re Gone’ out now via Spacebomb Records. This song continues her creative partnership with Gus Seyffert (Beck, Norah Jones, Michael Kiwanuka) who produced the song in his LA studio. ‘When You’re Gone’ follows her critically acclaimed self-titled debut in June 2017 which received widespread praise including including a 5/5 The Independent album review and features everywhere from Uncut and the Sunday Times to The FADER and Stereogum. She also went on to play a two night residency at London‘s The Islington (“A wandering star is born”, ★★★★, The Observer) and toured the UK and Europe alongside Father John Misty, Michael Kiwanuka and Matthew E. White as well as Kevin Morby, José González, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Fleet Foxes, Waxahatchee, Real Estate and more in the US.
Speaking of the track Bedouine says:
“When I started ‘When You’re Gone’ I was just messing around with pretty chords. Then the lyrics spontaneously came to me much later when I read something on Instagram, which is kind of hilarious. It triggered a line that eventually rolled out the entire song. In retrospect I think it reflects on the time since I’ve released my first record; in nondescript hotel rooms alone or getting dropped off a cliff after tour is over, not exactly sure what to do with myself. It also touches on what that can mean when it comes to the people you’re closest to. My favorite part may be the delicate intro that’s tucked away in the record as a hidden track.”
The video for ‘When You’re Gone’ was filmed in Iceland (during Iceland Airwaves) and at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, where the strings were recorded.
Bedouine will play at SXSW 2019 next week including showcases hosted by Stereogum, Paste, Netflix, Desert Daze, and Spacebomb/Virginia is for Music Lovers. Following that she heads to London on March 22nd for a sold out show at the Southbank Centre‘s Purcell Room
Today Bedouine also announces upcoming shows in New York, Los Angelesand London at Queen Elizabeth Hall. A full list of upcoming dates is below.
Bedouine has a story to match the name. Azniv Korkejian, born in Aleppo, Syria to Armenian parents, spent her childhood in Saudi Arabia, moving to America when her family won a Green Card lottery. Living at various times in Boston, Houston, Lexington, Austin, and Savannah, she eventually found a community of musicians in Los Angeles that felt like home. Eschewing notions of nomadic chic, Bedouine represents minimalism motivated by travel, paring down and paring down until only the essential remains. Her music establishes a sustained and complete mood, reflecting on the unending reverberations of displacement, unafraid to take pleasure along the way.
