Cass McCombs has shared a new single ‘Priestess’, his first new music since re-signing to Domino Records. The single is released in conjunction with McCombs’ NPR Tiny Desk Concert debut where he performed the new track as well as career-spanning highlights including one of his most widely beloved and praised songs, ‘County Line’, from WIT’S END, ‘Robin Egg Blue’ from the follow up Humor Risk, and ‘Opium Flower’ off the Not The Way EP. McCombs (guitar, keyboard) was joined by Brian Betancourt (bass), Frank LoCrasto (keyboards) and Austin Vaughn (drums) for this performance.
‘Priestess’ is an elegy, a statement of gratitude, and yet another gem of devastatingly poignant songwriting. In writing ‘Priestess’, McCombs was inspired by a rekindling of his working relationship with Domino and the revisitation of his early material in last year’s re-issue campaign to get back to basics. ‘Priestess’ sees McCombs returning to more economical song structures and to the people he worked with in the past, including Jason Quever (Papercuts) and Chris Cohen, two of his earliest musical cohorts. They recorded the new material in Northern California, not far from where they cut their musical teeth (as documented on last year’s archival release, Seed Cake On Leap Year).
Cass McCombs plays the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN this weekend before embarking on a North American solo tour supporting Beth Gibbons. He’ll support Father John Misty in Ireland and the UK in August, and MJ Lenderman in Los Angeles in September. All dates are below with tickets and further information available here.
Additionally, McCombs will be releasing a limited edition split 7” with Panda Bear as part of Record Store Day on April 12th.
