One year on from his critically acclaimed grand, holistic album Chasescene Daniel Knox recently announced a new mini-album I Had A Wonderful Time. The mini-album will be released on 13 December via Knox’s own label H.P Johnson Presents alongside the reissue of his 2015 self-titled album – an incredible work of world-building and song-craft, under-appreciated at the time but now reissued on blue vinyl, limited to 500 copies. Along with the announcement Knox shared the first single from I Had A Wonderful Time, ‘Hollow‘. Today he has followed up with the video for the second track ‘Room Key’, animated by Joyce Wu from Mofoland.

Speaking of the track Knox says:“I’ve written a lot of songs people think are sad. Some of them are, but I think there is triumph in co-misery. I’ve always felt uplifted by hearing someone tell a painful story that I see myself in. ‘Room Key’ is about one of the worst things that ever happened to me, but instead of being an account of that, it’s a song about the telling and what comes after.”

Mofoland, who was drawn to Daniel’s unique outlook and reached out to him for collaboration, offers these words, another strange addition to the Daniel Knox world:

“The process started with a map. Mofoland is a secret layer, it can be seen if you look close enough (or far enough) in daily life, it kinds of float over earth, like a net. Earth’s crime scene become Mofoland’s love story, creatures starting to jump out from human’s breasts, a boob is flying towards me.”

I Had A Wonderful Time skips back across his back catalogue to pick up where his 2015 self-titled release left off. Daniel Knox had a more pared down, isolated sound than Chasescene, though still full of unique sounds and textures that are drawn on for this new mini-album. Made largely alone – but with contributions from Joshua Fitzgerald Klocek and Justin Dennis, trusted collaborators who worked on the self-titled and who understand and enrich Knox’s unique vision – I Had A Wonderful Time is Knox at his most instinctive and revealing.

Daniel Knox has also today been announced as the main support for a European tour with The Handsome Family in May including a date at London’s EartH.
