Dog Day 2013 Release Round-Up
2013 has been a hell of a year at Dog Day – one of our busiest and most abundant yet, not to mention we celebrate our ten year anniversary this year. Still to come before the end of year is the return of the mighty White Denim and their fifth record Corsicana Lemonade, we welcome back Active Child with his EP ‘Rapor’ and one of 2013’s most joyous highlights Matthew E. White releases a new EP ‘Outer Face’ next week too. We also have debut EP’s from newcomers Rosie Lowe (‘It really is an EP of the year’ The Guardian) and Jaakko Eino Kalevi (‘It’s done the way Jaakko does things: strange and beautiful with a side order of deep-fried question mark’ Vice) on 2 December. Both are set for big things in 2014.
This year marked the long awaited return of The Knife and their sprawling, politically charged and heavily ambitious record Shaking The Habitual. Another artist previously on a seven year hiatus James Holden, came back to the fore this year with his equally ambitious and frankly, jaw-droppingly good album The Inheritors.
We also had some new blood in the form of Nadine Shah, whose album Love Your Dum and Mad continues to charm since its release to wide critical acclaim in July and plays a sold out show at Hoxton Plaza tomorrow. We welcomed Alabama-born Waxahatchee to the Dog Day stable, with her second album Cerulean Salt sure to be one of the albums of the year. Katie is touring the UK next week with her twin sister’s band Swearin’, a line up not to be missed. Factory Floor released their stunningly minimal debut album last month and we also introduced Daughn Gibson to the UK with his second, Sub Pop released album, the brilliantly twisted Me Moan.
This year also saw the return of several Dog Day mainstays with a trio of Americana records including the ever sprightly Caitlin Rose with her souped-up AM radio album The Stand In, Phosphorescent with his acclaimed Muchacho and the freakishly talented guitarist William Tyler with the impossibly beautiful Impossible Truth. The versatile Justin Vernon also dropped back in with his marvellous band Volcano Choir whose album Repave was an understated joy. They play their first ever UK dates in November in Bristol and London’s Barbican.
Special mention goes out to Neko Case who has long been a Dog Day favourite and joined the ranks with her bruised but divine album The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You. Her most honest yet accessible record to date, she was rewarded with huge critical acclaim with The Sunday Times tipping it as one of the albums of the year.
2014 will herald the return of Dog Day favourite Little Dragon alongside some fabulous new artists including Angel Olsen.
Thanks as ever for all the support in 2013.
