Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points has today shared a new single, ‘Del Oro’, which is out now via Ninja Tune.Following the crunchy, gnarled, all-out energy of last year’s smash single ‘Birth4000‘; ‘Del Oro’ ebbs and flows, twinkling with vintage Floating Points nostalgia before pulling the rug and locking in to a head-down, dancefloor packing groove.

As with ‘Birth4000’, ‘Del Oro”s artwork comes from Tokyo based artist Akiko Nakayama. Nakayama brings her painting to life using vibrant, brilliant liquids that combine and wash away, meant to represent the natural growth, change and life cycle of all things on earth. Nakayama worked alongside long-time Floating Points collaborators Hamill Industries to create the “Alive Painting” to accompany the track.

Shepherd will be playing a number of dates throughout the summer including playing at London‘s All Points EastWe Out Here FestivalLost Village Festival and Forwards Festival. Last year at Hollywood Bowl he played Mercury Prize nominated masterpiece Promises for the first and only time alongside an all-star cast of players that included Shabaka HutchingsKieran HebdenDan SnaithKara Lis Coverdale and Hinako Omori with Miguel Atwood Ferguson conducting. The album which features Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra was hailed as “one of the greatest modern jazz albums” by Resident Advisor.

Shepherd also recently composed his first ballet for symphony orchestra and electronics, Mere Mortals, which was performed by the San Francisco Ballet in collaboration with artistic director Tamara Tojo and choreographer Aszure Barton and Hamill Industries. The ballet premiered at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House in January, returning for another run in April with all 14 shows so far sold out. It was met with rave reviews with The New York Times declaring it “a hit” and the San Francisco Chronicle saying of the show that “the greatest glory here belongs to Floating Points” and describing his contributions as “a thing of sonic wonder” and “an absolute aural roller coaster”.

‘Del Oro’ is also available on very limited white label vinyl.
