James Holden‘s first new album since 2017, Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space of All Possibilities will be released on 31 March via Border Community. Having already shared lead single ‘Contains Multitudes‘ and the video for ‘Common Land‘, he has today followed up with new single ‘

In The End You’ll Know’.At the start of last year Holden tweeted this. The result takes the form of the undulating dancefloor melancholy of ‘In The End You’ll Know’.

Ever since Holden purchased his quirky malfunctioning Prophet 600 from the legendary 5G synth shop in Tokyo, its trusty warm and bright tones have become a key part of his sound: ‘Renata‘ and ‘Rannoch Dawn‘ (from 2013’s The Inheritors), ‘The Neverending‘ (from 2017’s The Animal Spirits), ‘Solidarity Theme‘ (part of Holden’s soundtrack for the A Cambodian Spring documentary, 2019), and now ‘In The End You’ll Know’ is the latest addition to this illustrious list.

Holden talks more about the track and it’s surprisingly touching back story in his recent brilliant and far-reaching interview with The Quietus. The interview also covers the etymology of the word trance, the evolutionary purpose of music and maintaining a sense of radical optimism. You can read it here:

In an interview with Mixmag out yesterday, James also talks about the subtle politics of the album. Read it here:

An unconstrained new album of rave music for a parallel universe, Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space of All Possibilities tops off a musical career spanning over twenty years. Here Holden is seeking to recapture the feeling of hope, freedom and possibility (both musical and otherwise) that characterised the venerated earliest days of dance music, when the boundaries of the distinct genres as we now know them had yet to crystallise. A time when a starry-eyed teenage Holden was still dreaming in the bedroom of his Leicestershire village, his clock-radio balanced on a wardrobe trying to catch the faint pirate FM signals from the nearest city.Standing in contrast to the expanded band and live take recordings of its predecessor The Animal Spirits, Holden’s fourth solo artist album is more of a continuous sound collage, artfully juxtaposing audio worlds in his own inimitable manner.
