Composer, musician, and producer Kara-Lis Coverdale today unveils ‘Freedom’, the second single from her first new album in eight years, From Where You Came, out 9 May via Smalltown Supersound. In conjunction, she has also announced select live dates and festival appearances, including a New York show on 15 Sep at Le Poisson Rouge. More live dates and festival appearances will be announced in the coming weeks.

On album standout ‘Freedom’, sound becomes a feat of physics; physical and subterranean, and even destructive amongst drone figures. It follows the lead single ‘Daze’ which was featured as the lead track on The Guardian’s playlist.

Coverdale says of ‘Freedom’:
”Freedom: How do we get it? Where does it come from? What does it feel like? How do we overcome? Merging ongoing work in mediated musical systems and a deep-rooted spiritual quest, modular hornpipes lead in gracing interpolated sequences while the underneath tectonically cracks and whirls, illustrating changing matter in unfathomable and irreversible proportion. It’s so grand it swallows itself, re-emerging within a black hole of levity, transcendence, and birth. This work is of universal natural phenomenon, as if watching a planetary body break itself apart, tectonic or geologic change, or perhaps, watching a star being born, emerging anew from immense pressure.”

Speaking directly to the rootlessness and alienation of modernity while processing the thrill and pain of being alive, From Where You Came draws strength through a commitment to groundedness. A dynamic and sublime work, the album unspools as a series of nocturnal transmissions and vivid stories, rich in vibrant, illuminating qualities. Drawing together 19th century programmatic music, mid-’70s instrumental modalism, and her distinctively colourful and multi-dimensional approach to composition, she conducts emotional resonance like currents of charge, hard-wiring the purely felt into electronic signals with ecological sensitivity.

Though written and recorded across several continents, including at the GRM Studio in Paris and the Elektronmusikstudion EMS in StockholmFrom Where You Came was completed in rural OntarioCanada. Featuring contributions from multidisciplinary sound artist and cellist Anne Bourne and GRAMMY award winning trombone player Kalia Vandever, the album’s eleven expansive yet condensed compositions incorporate strings, woodwind, brass, keys, software and modular synthesis, inscribing a musical language that resonates animations with unfiltered, striking clarity. “Anything can have a voice,” says Coverdale. “For me, voice is beyond human”.

Born in Burlington, Canada and of Estonian heritage, this major new work from Kara-Lis Coverdale follows Grafts (2017), Aftertouches (2015, Sacred Phrases), and A 480 (2014, Constellation Tatsu).
