Leon Vynehall‘s debut album Nothing Is Still, is out today via Ninja Tune including singles ‘Envelopes (Chapter VI)‘, ‘Movements (Chapter III)‘ (stunning accompanying videos directed by Young Replicant here and novella chapters here) and ‘English Oak (Chapter VII)‘.
Next month Vynehall will present his debut immersive live show in support of the album with a three night run at Hackney Showroom on 3,4,5 July, all three are now sold out. Tonight at 8pm he’ll play a in-store DJ event at London’s Phonica to celebrate the launch after playing the last of his NTS residency shows this afternoon at 2pm.
“When creating the album there was always a feeling of disorientation and distortion that I wanted to emphasise within the live show.” Vynehall says, “I knew that I had to push and expanded the album’s sonic capabilities with the musicians, but I also wanted to draw upon the artefacts from my grandparents time spent in New York City in the 1960s and general visual reference of that period, so I went about finding ways to accomplish that”
Having already worked with Blue May, the Mercury Music Prize and Brit Award Nominated producer/mixer/musical director who mixed Nothing Is Still, Vynehall and May have worked closely to reimagine the album as a live performance bringing in some of London’s top musicians from the leftfield and jazz scenes including Sam Beste – Piano/Synth, Rob Mullarkey – Bass/Double Bass and Will Ritson – Drums/Percussion with Vynehall sitting at the core as a master of manipulation on Synth/Drum Machines/Guitar and a somewhat dilapidated Lap Steel.
For the visual element of the show Vynehall has been working on a number of ideas including working with Morgan Beringer. After being inspired by his abstract visuals Vynehall linked up with Beringer and the pair drew upon the family’s history by directly using the polaroids that Vynhalls’ grandparents took in 60’s New York City, alongside the more recent films Young Replicant created for the album. The imagery has been reimagined through manipulation, abstraction and time stretching that forms part of a series of interconnecting images.
In addition, Vynehall will be supporting Jon Hopkins as a special guest for a series of DJ dates in the US in September as well as a DJ set at New York‘s esteemed MoMA PS1 in August.
The Hackney Showroom performances are supported by Arts Council England
