Luke Abbott has announced his most concise body of work since 2014’s critically acclaimed Wysing Forest in the form of a new EP under the moniker Earlham Mystics. ‘Stolen Hearts’, his first track as Earlham Mystics, is streaming now with the Truth EP set for release on March 24th via Gold Panda’s NOTOWN Recordings label.

“There’s a road near my new house called Earlham Road. I dreamt one night soon after I moved there, that I visited a shop on that road which was full of these colourful glowing eggs, about the size of the dragon eggs in Game of Thrones, but glowing with blue and white light, the shop was called Earlham Mystics”.

This is Luke’s woozy recollection of how he came up with the alias for his latest release. It’s fitting too, our dreams place us in an alternate reality and for Luke, Earlham Mystics does the same. Born out of a desire to break some of his own rules, Earlham Mystics is Luke Abbott hopping onto an alternate timeline for his career, both looking back to basics and moving in exciting new directions. Taking its roots from a time before 2014’s Wysing Forest moved him into a more symphonic, freeform realm and carrying those roots into the now, the Truth EP is Luke at his most immediate, offering up his most accessible work since previous releases on NOTOWN such as Modern Driveway and Object Is A Navigator.

While drawing on wider questions of truth in troubling times as well as more personal meditations on fatherhood and Luke’s private life, the Truth EP is littered with flashes of Luke’s off-kilter, colourful and at times self-deprecating personality. ‘Stolen Hearts’, for one is described by Luke as “me trying to make a pop track but not really being able to do it properly”. Admittedly, that’s true, but what Earlham Mystics has enabled Luke to do on ‘Stolen Hearts’ is something very close – craft a relentless earworm. ‘Stolen Hearts’ is instantaneous; piling on layers at a rate of knots before stripping clean with a shuddering, infectious synth line that makes it quite possibly the most accessible thing he’s ever done.

Though concise and flowing, the EP doesn’t settle into one groove; title track ‘Truth’ takes a more stripped back, vocal-led approach, driven relentlessly forward by slick, punchy percussion. “The idea of ‘truth’ is a bit of a loaded topic” says Luke of the track, putting it plainly, “I hate this notion that we are living in ‘post-truth’ times. Truth isn’t something you can hide from, it’s the truth!”. Luke’s difficulty with accepting the idea of ‘post-truth’ comes across in the intense repetition and overlapping of vocals while the underlying beauty serves as a reminder that this notion is not set in stone.

This eases into the more sprawling, ambient ‘Fuck Hype’ which juxtaposes its brazen title with subtly building echoes and synth lines which most closely mirror Wysing Forest while remaining succinct and satisfyingly easy to digest or as Luke puts it, “like a 4am cup of tea when you’re tired but you can’t sleep”.

Following the crescendo of the aforementioned ‘Stolen Hearts’, the EP begins to settle into beautifully minimal tranquility with ‘Hera’, a track written for Luke’s daughter and fittingly named after the Greek goddess of women, marriage and childbirth.

The Truth EP is out March 24th via NOTOWN Recordings.
