Meridian Brothers, the solo-project and live band of Colombian based Eblis Alvarez, recently announced their new album Cumbia Siglo XXI will be released August 21 via Bongo Joe Records. Following the previously shared ‘Puya Del Empresario‘ they have today followed up with a video for album opener ‘Los Golpeadores de la Cumbia’, a delightfully off-kilter journey between rock and Llamador drum rhythms, Alvarz’s unique vocals cracking and tumbling endearingly.

Alvarez says of the track:

“The lyrics introduce the theme of most of the songs of the album: The absurd of centralised ideologies. In this particular song, ‘Los Golpeadores de la Cumbia’ (cumbia beaters) refers to cumbia as an element of emancipation of a minority (the cumbia ghetto). The ideology of cumbia gradually turns into an environment of hedonism and corruption ending in a far out party. The video at the end, depicts Anibal Velazquez, the legendary artist from Colombia who in the form of a giant Kraken destroys the corrupt party leaving just debris and solitude.”

The updating of the traditional cumbia sound of Alvarez’ native Colombia sits at the centre of Cumba Siglo XXI and is the reason why it sounds like nothing else. The album is inspired by legendary group Cumbia Siglo XX‘s experimentation with the traditional cumbia form in the late 70s and early 80s which lead to an entirely new form of the genre. Now Meridian Brothers take this style as a jumping off point and continue the experiment, thus the XXI iteration of cumbia music is born.

Cumbia Siglo XXI follows the success of Meridian Brothers largely acoustic album ¿Dónde estás María? (4/5 The Guardian) but as is typical to their prolific career so far, continues to push the band in new directions. For those unfamiliar with Meridian Brothers and their twisting, turning back-catalogue, this is a good place to start, with something entirely new.
