Nadine Shah recently announced Holiday Destination – her brilliant and compelling third album out on 1965 Records – an album which sees her stepping out of the shadow of the complicated relationships she examined on her second album Fast Food and taking account of the world at large. Today she has shared the blistering video for ‘Out The Way’, edited, directed & produced by handheldcineclub.

On ‘Out the Way’ – a terrific first single that is as biting and scathing in equal measure as any of her output and has already spent multiple weeks on the 6 Music A-List – Shah grapples with the fact that as a second-generation immigrant, her identity is constantly brought into question, the song appropriately ricocheting with burning intensity, bubbling over the bed of Pete Wareham‘s taut, jagged saxophone as she contemplates the rise of global nationalism. The video uses Salem witch trials to illustrate this narrative in a way that’s striking, pertinent and completely without restraint.

Nadine said of the video: “The video is a response to this current global rise in nationalism, this awful rhetoric of “us and them”. I wanted the image to shock the viewer to highlight the brutality we are seeing happen. This is why we use the Salem witch trials as a reference in the video, to me that’s how it feels but with certain pockets of faiths being targeted.”
