Having steadily built a live following and reputation for their live shows in their hometown of Brighton, second home London and beyond, Porridge Radiorecently released their first new music since 2016 in the form of the melodic, ferocious and addictive ‘Give/Take‘, a track that garnered them ‘Song of the Day’ from The Line of Best Fit, ‘Hottest Tracks’ from the Sunday Times and praise from Clash, Wonderland, DIY, Paste, Stereogum and more. The track has been on playlists from Crack, Loud and Quiet, NME and others as well as getting radio play from 6Music and Radio X as John Kennedy’s X-Posure Hot One.
Today they ramp up the intensity with rousing, energising new single ‘Don’t Ask Me Twice’. Influenced by “wanting to use a barre chord in a song, micachu & the shapes and early cat power” the track mixes post-punk verses with pop laden, stadium begging choruses.
Speaking of the track the band’s Dana Margolin says:
“For me, ‘Don’t Ask Me Twice’ is a song about suddenly noticing where you are and being surprised to find yourself in your own body in that place. When we play it live it feels like it’s all going to fall apart at any moment, but then it kind of pulls back and falls into place again, and then suddenly the chaos comes back and everything feels so intense. For me it’s about embracing the chaos because you can’t escape it, and accepting how you can have really contradicting feelings and thoughts all at the same time in your own head, and how that’s ok. It’s part of figuring it out. Scream “I don’t know what I want”. It feels good.”
Porridge Radio started as Dana Margolin’s bedroom project and as a way to learn how to play and perform or as Dana puts it, “it started with me alone at open mic nights shouting at a room of old men”, but are now a 4-piece based between London and Brighton who inelegantly knot together beautiful melodic pop songs with vicious and furious emotional outpour.
After a series of home-recorded solo demos, a split EP with West America, and the growing legend of their live shows, in 2016 they released their first full band LP, Rice, Pasta and Other Fillers. Recorded across sheds, bedrooms and practice spaces, RP&OF‘s lyrics, title and artwork, brings to mind a certain scrapbook absurdism at the core of Porridge Radio’s work. Since their incarnation the band have built a following both as headliners and as support for the likes of Soccer Mommy, Alex G, Goat Girl, Dream Wife, Sorry, Speedy Ortiz, Vagabon, SASAMI and more.
Now, with ‘Give/Take’ and ‘Don’t Ask Me Twice’, Porridge Radio are back with intent. The same chaotic energy at their core, but this time they crash land with grace.
