Releasing their first new music since 2016, Porridge Radio have been anything but quiet in the two years leading up to today. Having steadily built a live following and reputation for their live shows in their hometown of Brighton, second home London and beyond, the band return today with a hotly anticipated new single in the form of ‘Give/Take’, released via Memorials of Distinction (which the band play a part in running). Equal parts melodic and ferocious, with an addictive groove and vocals that build from direct and droll to exhilaratingly passionate, the track displays the band’s constant, exciting evolution and individuality.
Speaking of the track the band’s Dana Margolin says:“it’s a song about desire and confusion and being a robot with constantly changing emotions (have i been programmed?). it’s about not knowing what your personality is if your thoughts and feelings and opinions change with your mood and your mood changes before you can catch up with it.“it’s also about learning how to know what you need, how to ask for it, how to take it. and because of that it’s also about guilt and longing and how they are constantly in dialogue with each other and how they can contradict each other. it’s about knowing what you need but not knowing how to accept that or how to get it.“
Porridge Radio started as Dana Margolin’s bedroom project and as a way to learn how to play and perform or as Dana puts it, “it started with me alone at open mic nights shouting at a room of old men”, but are now a 4-piece based between London and Brighton who make and play ‘a perfect blend between cool lo-fi rock and strange, morbid sadcore’ (Various Small Flames), inelegantly knotting together beautiful melodic pop songs with vicious and furious emotional outpour. “The songs are a healing process,” says Dana, “a way to understand how I feel (especially when I can’t connect to it at the time). The band is a way to communicate that to other people and to connect with them.”
After a series of home-recorded solo demos, a split EP with West America, and the growing legend of their live shows, in 2016 they released their first full band LP, Rice, Pasta and Other Fillers. Recorded across sheds, bedrooms and practice spaces, RP&OF‘s lyrics, title and artwork, brings to mind a certain scrapbook absurdism at the core of Porridge Radio’s work. Since their incarnation the band have built a following both as headliners and as support for the likes of Soccer Mommy, Alex G, Goat Girl, Dream Wife, Sorry, Speedy Ortiz, Vagabon, SASAMI and more.
Now, with ‘Give/Take’, Porridge Radio are back with intent. The same chaotic energy at their core, but this time they crash land with grace.
