Berlin based, Peruvian artist Sofia Kourtesis has today shared her new single ‘Madres’ which is out now on Ninja Tune. The single marks Kourtesis’ first new music since the release of ‘Estación Esperanza (feat. Manu Chao)‘ in January last year. Overflowing with open-hearted technicolour, ‘Madres’ finds Sofia further honing her own lighter-than-air vocals. As she continues building a sound that she has made so distinctly her own, new and irresistible technical and vocal flourishes rear their head.

Speaking of the track Sofia says:

“This song is about my mother, her mother, my sisters who are mothers, my brothers who are mothers, and all the LGBTQIA+ members who are mothers to their communities.
Madres has no gender.
Madres loves to protect the ones you love.
If you get lost, follow your mother’s voice, they will always bring you back.
I also want to dedicate this song to Peter Vajkoczy, a brain surgeon who has become the hope of my own mother! He gives people hope by daring the most complicated surgeries in the world; he believes in miracles, love, and the strength to protect loved ones.
Life goes by quickly. Life is fragile.”

Her first music of 2023, ‘Madres’ follows an unstoppable few years for Sofia. ‘Estación Esperanza’ lead to a cover feature from Mixmag as well as an ecstatic response that saw the track spread across the summer’s festivals, a warm and joyful rallying cry. This followed her 2021 EP Fresia Magdalena, which received a 5/5 review from NME and appeared on ‘End of Year’ lists from the likes of The New York TimesPitchfork and DJ Mag with lead single ‘La Perla‘ also named as Pitchfork‘s #13 Song of the Year. ‘By Your Side‘ was also chosen as Spotify‘s #6 Best Electronic Songs of 2021.

At the end of last year Sofia played her debut UK headline shows at London‘s Lafayette and Manchester‘s YES, both of which sold out right away. Across the summer she delivered standout performances at GlastonburyGreen ManWide AwakePrimavera and more as well as playing support shows opening for Caribou. These performances led to her being named as one of Mixmag‘s ‘Top 15 Live Acts of the Year‘ and she capped of the year with the release of a brilliantly energetic and moving ‘RA Session‘ with Resident Advisor.
