Swamp Dogg recently announced his new album Love, Loss, and Auto-Tunewill be released on 7 September via Joyful Noise. The nine song collection, featuring production by Ryan Olson (PoliçaGayngs) and digital effects by Justin Vernon, finds Swamp Dogg’s bluesy southern soul colliding head-on with 21st Century electronic music production techniques. Along with the announcement he shared the video for lead single ‘I’ll Pretend (feat. Justin Vernon)‘. Today he has followed up with ‘Answer Me, My Love’, Premiering via The FADER, his unique, distinctive take on the track originally released by Nat King Cole and featured on Joni Mitchell‘s Both Sides Now.

Speaking of the track Swamp Dogg says: “‘Answer Me, My Love’ is what we call a “Money record” and since I need money I recorded it. You can’t go wrong with a Nat “King” Cole hit! He never recorded a bad song and always got hits. I need to pay some bills.”

Love, Loss, and Auto Tune continues Swamp Dogg’s development of a catalogue of music outside of genre and convention. Since he radically rebranded himself in 1970 from Jerry Williams, Jr., Swamp Dogg’s unpredictable and idiosyncratic releases tapping soul, disco, radical politics and subtle satire have seen him build a huge underground audience. Now, nearly fifty years after his debut release, Swamp Dogg stands on the precipice of another radical reinvention, at the age of 75 he’s set to dive headfirst and headstrong as ever into a world that none other than him could hope to pull off.

Love, Loss, and Auto-Tune is a gem, a unique and unpredictable moment in the life of a unique and unpredictable artist that some consider a national treasure. “I might be the only one,” Swamp Dogg says. “But I think Swamp Dogg is a national treasure.”
