At the end of last year Vera Sola released her debut album Shades. The album received widespread praise including a Sunday Times ‘Breaking Act’, 9/10from The Line of Best Fit, 4/5 from Mojo and Q and features from Loud and Quiet, DIY and more. Today she follows up with new song ‘Crooked Houses’ as well as a reworked version of album track ‘Loving, Loving’.
Speaking of ‘Crooked Houses’ Vera Sola says:
“The recording process here was an entirely new approach for me. I resisted the temptation to bury perceived imperfections in a soundscape, or veil myself in many layers of harmony. It’s all very bare.It was also the first time I’d ever had another person play on my recorded songs (till this point I’d been the only one playing on my recordings). That’s vastly different than just doing it myself. It opens up whole new possibilities, as well as new challenges. It’s fitting, because in retrospect, the recording process and sparse arrangement ultimately reflects what the song’s about— the anxiety of new things, of vulnerability, as well as the balance of risk and reward when opening up to another.”
Last November she also made her debut London live appearances with brilliantly received full band shows at both The Shacklewell Arms and Rough Trade East. Later this month she’ll return for a full UK / European tour which includes London‘s The Lexington, Manchester‘s The Castle and a show in Paris with Jessica Pratt.

Vera Sola grew up between New York City and a farm in Canada, raised by artists, writers and seekers. As a child she was surrounded by music—training early on as a dancer, learning to play piano, and later teaching herself guitar and bass. Writing too was always a passion. Considering she holds a degree in Literature from Harvard, it’s fitting that Vera Sola’s songs are arranged to give words a well-earned place at their center. On Shades, Vera employs her background in poetry to explore at once the generalities and subtleties of the nature of ‘femininity’. Each song speaks the story of a different feminised character—whether a spurned lover, a stolen country, an anthropomorphised rhinoceros or biblical first woman—delivered with a skilled literary approach and signature turn of phrase.Recorded in St. Louis at Native Sound Studio, Vera wrote, played and arranged all of the parts on Shades. With her distinct voice as a foundation, traditional instrumentation and the music of found objects are woven into a soundscape that is all at once complex and sparse.Photo credit: Damon Duke
