World As A Waiting Room is the result – a time capsule of the raw and exposed regression from temporary inconvenience to universal uncertainty. Following a week of basic tracking at the band’s Radio Milk studio, Austin’s stay-at-home order forced them to work remotely, with band leader James Petralli holed up at Radio Milk to finish vocal recording and overdubs. In addition to Steve Terebecki (bass), Michael Hunter (keyboards), and Greg Clifford (drums), who play on all nine tracks, the band called on an extensive list of collaborators – dating back to the band’s formation – to contribute writing, recording and mixing.
Despite communication and workflow difficulties – or because of them – Petralli and company made swift work of the album. Created on a tight timeline the project recaptures the energy of Last Day of Summer – the band’s summer retreat album – but against a very different backdrop.
Speaking of the project, Petralli says:
“This project was both incredibly liberating and terrifying. Our isolation from one another during recording and the tight deadline created the necessity for more clearly defined roles and more direct and focused communication between the collaborators. For some of us it represented a way forward, for others a way out. I learned a lot about myself through this process and I think it is an important work for the band, captured at a pivotal moment in everyone’s lives.Oh, and it wasn’t made any easier by the enduring war I’ve been having with the raccoon who is trying to make his home in my attic throughout all this.”
