Following the announcement of his new album Modern Country – out 10 June 2016 via Merge – with the previously released ‘Gone Clear‘ and ‘Kingdom of Jones‘, William Tyler has today shared another cut from the album, ‘Sunken Garden‘.
Speaking to The Line of Best Fit about the track, Tyler says: “[‘Sunken Garden’] was inspired by the Debussy piece “Sunken Cathedral,” although I don’t think it bears any direct sonic resemblance to it. The title is a reference to a style of garden that was popular in the South for a while. There’s a large one in Florida; one in Virginia. It’s a nod to the arcane, architectural ghosts and the kind of scenes you would see in old postcards. During recording with the band it definitely evolved from a rambling acoustic number to something that sounds like seventies French film music or Bill Withers.”
Modern Country features an ensemble backing group consisting of multi-instrumentalist Phil Cook (Hiss Golden Messenger, Blind Boys of Alabama), bassist Darin Gray (Tweedy, Jim O’Rourke), and percussionist Glenn Kotche(Wilco). The album was tracked at April Base Studios in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and finished in Nashville. It was recorded and mixed by Jon Ashley, and produced by Tyler and Brad Cook.
William Tyler is will support Wilco in the US this August. He’ll also play at the Bon Iver-curated Eaux Claires Music & Arts festival. Pre-order the album on CD or LP here, or digitally via iTunes.
